Yang Shuxiang leads re:Sound in Pēteris Vasks second violin concerto, “Distant Light”.
Known for the sheer beauty of sound in his music, Distant Light is, in Vasks’ own words, ‘nostalgia with a touch of tragedy’, a reflection on evening light as a metaphor for the twilight years of human beings.
On the programme is also Mozart’s great “Linz” Symphony, and Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s first opus, Pelimannit (“The Fiddlers”), free fantasies on tunes that he found in an 18th-century notebook of a folk fiddler.
