The Bridge of Kinship

Keroncong music today is widely considered to be an Indonesian genre, one that combines Javanese and Western music traditions.

Believed to have been brought to Indonesia by the Portuguese, the music underwent a slow evolution of performance styles and configurations, before becoming the ukulele, guitar, violin, flute, cello and bass ensemble that we see today.

In this keroncong presentation, Indonesian composer Pak Liliek Jasqee leads his ensemble in performances of familiar tunes and new compositions, paying ode to the musical, cultural, and language ties that Indonesia and Singapore share. Singapore jazz artist Rudy Djoharnaen will perform with the Ensemble Keroncong Eljasqee in the second of the three-set performances.
