About Atrika Dance Company

Atrika Dance Company was formed in 1994 at Kolam Ayer Community Club (CC). The company has developed a uniquely Singaporean approach to traditional Malay dance form that reflects the diversity of Singapore society. It embraces and instills a Singaporean heart and soul without diluting its essence and message.

Atrika Dance Company engages in what they call “post-traditional”, which stands at the midpoint between traditional and contemporary dance movements. The company first unveiled this genre of dance through a piece titled Jelingan Manja, at the Festival of Asian Performing Arts in 1991. It was conceptualised and choreographed by Ms Mazlina Buang, and performed by the best of Singapore Malay dancers. Eventually, this style of dance and Atrika Dance Company was accepted and thus began their journey at Kolam Ayer CC in 1994.
