Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 will showcase an exciting, colourful and vibrant 7 weeks long programmes from 19 January to 6 March 2019.

 

During the festive celebrations period, Chinatown will be soaked in festivities and beautifully adorned with colourful lanterns and dazzling decorations. We would like to invite you, your family and friends to join us in this festive celebration at Chinatown so as to better understand and experience the allure and significance of this traditional festival.

Programmes:

Chinatown Walking Trail

  • Date: 20, 26 & 27 January and 2 & 3 February 2019
  • Time: 3.30pm – 5pm
  • Meeting Point: Information Booth in front of the stage at Kreta Ayer

The walking trail is free. Registration is on first-come-first-serve basis. Each trail is conducted in either English or Mandarin and limited to 10 participants.

With its strong heritage and character, Chinatown has become an enduring and iconic venue for locals and visitors to visit and soak in the Lunar New Year festivities and street decoration ambient during the celebration of this traditional Chinese festival. Discover Chinatown’s heritage and culture in this free walking trail that covers Kreta Ayer Road, Sago Street, Pagoda Street and New Bridge Road.

With “Celebration of Abundance and Prosperity” as this year Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations theme, participants can embrace the bountiful photo opportunities as the streets in Chinatown will be decorated with beautiful street light-up, shop for festive goodies at the bustling Festive Street Bazaar and enjoy nightly stage performances at Kreta Ayer Square.

Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony

  • Date: 19 January 2019
  • Time: 6.00pm – 10.00pm
  • Venue: New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street

The Official Light Up and Opening Ceremony marks the opening of the Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019. The event continues to awe visitors with entertaining performances by both local and overseas leading performing troupes. Together with spectacular firecrackers and fireworks display, it will bring the opening ceremony to a greater height as we usher in the Year of the Pig.

Street Light-Up

  • Date: 19 January – 6 March 2019
  • Time: 7.00pm – 6.00am (4 & 5 February 2019)
  • 7.00pm – 2.00am (Friday & Saturday)
  • 7.00pm – 12.00mn (Sunday – Thursday)
  • Venue: Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road, South Bridge Road and Garden Bridge

The official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony will be followed by 6 weeks of street light up along the streets of Chinatown. The light-up will feature handmade sculptured lanterns of Pigs, flowers and greetings. Combining traditions with modern design, visitors will be enthralled by the creativity of the contemporary street light-up design.

Chinatown Chinese New Year Countdown Party

  • Date: 4 February 2019
  • Time: 9.30pm – 12.30am
  • Venue: New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street

Usher in the Year of the Pig with live performances and a rousing countdown celebration with MediaCorp artistes in the heart of Chinatown. Be entertained by the lively performances from a medley of festive songs, skits to interactive games as the countdown party culminates with rousing firecrackers and a spectacular display of fireworks.

Festive Street Bazaar

  • Date: 18 January – 4 February 2019
  • Time: 6.00pm – 10.30pm (Daily)
  • 6.00pm – 1.00am (Chinese New Year’s Eve)
  • Venue: Pagoda Street, Smith Street, Sago Street, Temple Street and Trengganu Street

With a variety of stalls lining up the streets of Chinatown, visitors can feast on mouth-watering New Year delicacies, enjoy the brilliant lights and decorations of the stalls and shop for the many New Year traditional goodies from cookies, decorative items, waxed duck and preserved fruits to potted plants and clothing.

Nightly Stage Shows

  • Date : 19 January – 4 February 2018
  • Time : 8.00pm – 10.30pm
  • Venue : Kreta Ayer Square

Catch nightly stage performances at Kreta Ayer Square during the Chinatown Chinese New Year celebrations. Be entertained by lively and vibrant stage performances, Lunar New Year songs and dance performances by local and overseas artistes and performing groups.

12th International Lion Dance Competition

  • Date: 26 January 2019
  • Time: 6.30pm – 10.30pm
  • Venue: Kreta Ayer Square

From the rhythmic beat of the drums to the jaw-dropping stunts, there’s just something about the lion dance that evokes a sense of awe and majesty. Steeped in tradition and culture, the lion dance has gained popularity across the globe over the years and is now an internationally recognised sport.

Calling all lion dance enthusiasts, head over to the open carpark at Banda Street to witness the power and strength of the ‘King of the Lions’ over an intense competition!

This annual event which is already into its 12th year will see numerous reputable top lion dance troupes from Singapore and Asia Pacific, all vying for the grand prize and the honour of being recognised as ‘the best of the best’ as they pit against one another with skillful stunts and intricate manoeuvres on the meihuazhuang.

Chinatown Wishing Tree

  • Date: 15 January – 3 February 2019
  • Time: 11.00am – 9.00pm
  • Venue: Chinatown Point

Make your New Year wishes come true at the Chinatown Wishing Tree! Besides, you can do charity to help the needy elderly. Write wishes for yourself and your loved ones on the “Make a Wish” card and hang them on the banyan tree. Each wishing card costs $2/- and all proceeds will be donated to the Kreta Ayer Seniors ‘ Activity Centre. Through this meaningful community event, you can bring festive cheers to the less fortunate and reaching out to them with your helping hands.

Chingay 2019 @ Heartlands

  • Date: 17 February 2019

  • Venue: New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street

The Chingay parade, the annual largest street performance and float parade in Asia, will make an appearance in Chinatown this year to bring the celebrations to a great height but also marking the end of the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Join us with your family and friends for a vibrant night that include special performances by local and overseas performers and not forgetting the 10 over beautifully decorated and lighted float.
