6 Easy Plants And Flowers That Kids Can Grow

Seeing plants and flowers grow from a tiny seed or starter plant is so much fun! And extra points if you grow flowers in your garden that draw butterflies and hummingbirds. Gardening may help your kids make the switch from screen time to outside time. Furthermore, exposure to sunlight, clean air, and physical activity may help you and your kids think more clearly.

By allowing your children to work with their hands, gardening will teach them responsibility and patience. Did you also know that giving kids a chance to participate in the growing process increases their likelihood of eating vegetables? Big win! Here are some suggestions for easy plants and flowers your kids can grow by themselves.

Leafy greens

Stunning and healthy salad greens are some of the easiest plants kids can easily grow! Specifically leafy greens such as romaine, kangkung, arugula, or spinach. This is because most of these plants can be grown in only a few short weeks, as the period from planting to harvest is so brief. And they can be grown year-round.

Another beautiful thing about leafy greens is that they can be quickly grown in urban gardens. So if you have a balcony or a rooftop garden, those would do just as well as growing them in the ground. And because they produced them themselves, they are more likely to eat them.

Shasta Daisies

Daisy is so traditional and extremely easy to grow! They are a very common sight, wildly blooming naturally alongside the road. And if you ever wanted them in your garden, now is the chance to grow them with your kids! Take a trip to your local plant nursery for suggestions on Shasta. They might be aware of brand-new types designed for a sunny area on your lawn.

Give your kids a vase once the flowers have grown, and let them choose their flower arrangement.

Petunias

Did you know that petunias are super easy to grow? And they seem to get better with new types emerging so often. The reason why we recommend petunias is that they are so low-maintenance. They are so low that you can put them in a container and forget about them for a few days. Great for kids with short attention spans.

They come in many pretty colours as well. Don’t worry when they look like they’re starting to wilt a little; they’re just being dramatic. If they start looking a little sorry for themselves, give them some water, and they'll quickly recover. They are genuinely the simplest plant that children can grow.

Succulents

Succulents are simple to grow and come in a wide variety of colours, shapes, and sizes. So the type of succulent you choose to grow will depend on the space you have for it. Some succulents can grow as big as a small car! The great thing about succulents that are grown outside, when planted, they can withstand days without water as their leaves are super absorbent. In some countries, they can survive extremely cold temperatures.

There are tiny succulents that your kids can grow and keep inside their bedrooms and houseplants. They are extremely low maintenance and can be left alone for days, just like their outdoor counterparts.

Cherry Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a fruit that you can quickly grow if you have an urban garden, but make sure you pick up the newer cherry tomato types instead of, the older tomato varieties. The older tomato varieties have long vines that need to be wrapped around long poles, which can be tedious. Not really something kids would be interested in getting into.

The newer cherry tomato types have been designed to be compact and tidy since they grow well in pots, which are great for urban farming. And they come in various colours, which is great as kids are drawn to bright colours.

Carrots

The green shoots on these shy orange cuties develop fast while the tasty roots remain buried for a few weeks, making them entertaining plants for kids. They'll be surprised when they catch their first glimpse of orange!

The happiness that children experience when they harvest the carrots they planted, tended to, and nurtured is incredibly beautiful. Or any other type of vegetable, really! Their diet will change, and they'll request that the veggies they grew to be included in their meals more regularly.

So if you're considering including gardening in your weekend activities with the kids, now is the time! Happy gardening!
