B2T Authors Week

B2T Authors Week

Designed to encourage Emerging Literacy Development through the exploration of stories from selected authors, children will learn to create their own stories from ideation to storyboarding and attempt writing their our own short stories.  Authors week kicks off exploring the work of Mo Willems, an American writer, animator, and creator of children’s books. Since 2003, Willems has authored numerous books for young children, many of which have garnered significant critical acclaim. The New York Times Book Review referred to Willems as “the biggest new talent to emerge thus far in the 00’s. Children will explore the Elephant and Piggie series which highlights the importance of friendships, kindness, creativity and individuality. With characters presented in a thoughtful manner set in humorous plots, these stories are for great for beginning readers.

Next up is Theodor Seuss Geisel, an American writer and illustrator best known for authoring popular children’s books under the pen name DrSeuss. His work includes several of the most popular children’s books of all time such as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and HamOh, the Places You’ll Go and Horton Hears a Who! stories that spark imagination and creativity and build courage and righteousness. Building upon his words, “A person’s a person, no matter how small,” we will focus on the uniqueness of individuals, the importance of teamwork and collaboration with the children during the programme sessions.

Creative writing and drawing is an important element of the B2T curriculum, and we look forward to present to you, the stories by our young aspiring authors.

Key Activities

During the sessions, children will be introduced to the concepts of story writing through engaging group and individual activities. They will:

  • Explore stories from selected authors and engage in conversation about story writing including character design and storyboard creation,
  • Collaborate with other children to create their own storyboards, including designing characters, placing events in order as well as discussing and resolving problems,
  • Construct short sentences to connect the beginning, middle and end of a story, practise writing short sentences in meaningful contexts and attempt to write their our own short stories,
  • Practise group reflection.

Through storyboarding children are encouraged to ask and respond to questions which supports and scaffolds the children’s reading development as well as learn to logically sequence their ideas (concrete or abstract).

Bring it Home!

Children will take home their specially-created individual/ group storyboard and story. The depth and completion of the stories are dependent on the child’s developmental stage and the days of participation in this programme.
