This one-day workshop will explore a basic of surface techniques that can be used to illustrate both sculptural and functional ceramic work.
Techniques for the many stages of clay will be demonstrated including wet and dry surfaces; sgraffito, mishima, carving, mono-printing, stencils, water-etching with wax, and slip trailing.
Participants will immediately experiment the techniques by using small test tiles as well as their own forms. This course is for students with a basic foundation in ceramics and applicable for both hand-builders or wheel students.
About the Artist:
Yoshi Fujii is the gallery manager and a resident artist at Baltimore Clayworks in Maryland, USA, where he’s been in one form or another since 2008. He’s originally from Fukuoka but moved to the States in 1996; his work very obviously reflects his heritage, focussed on wheel-thrown forms with intricate surface decoration that is glazed with a minimalist colour palette.
